Cenotes

There are more than 10,000 cenotes on the Yucatán Peninsula and new ones are being discovered all the time. The word Cenote comes from the Mayan word “Tsʼonot” and it means “water hole”. Many of the cenotes are interconnected and make up a gigantic underground river system. Like any river, this one ends in the sea. For the Mayans, the Cenotes were a sacred place. They believed that the cenotes were entrances to Xibalba. “Xibalba” is the Mayan name for “the underworld”. The underworld was an important place to the Mayan people because many of the gods lived there. One of these gods was "Chaac", the god of rain.

Cavern Diving

The water in the Cenotes is rainwater that has filtered through several layers of limestone. This makes the water crystal clear and the view is virtually endless. You can enjoy diverse formations of underwater stalactites and stalagmites. It literally feels like diving into another world, an indescribable feeling! The water temperature is around 24-26 degrees Celsius, or 75-79 degrees Fahrenheit. An Open Water certification is required for most of the cenotes. However, a few of them require an Advanced Open Water certification.
